Mt. Madonna Continuation High School
Introduction and School Demographics Mt. Madonna Continuation High School provides all students with a strong foundational curriculum based on the California State Standards. The main objective is to help students graduate with their high school diploma and transition to a community college, vocational technical schools and/or enter the work force. Mt. Madonna Continuation High School has implemented a rigorous academic intervention program to help students pass the California High School Exit Exam. Students are enrolled in a core English and Math classes in addition to the CAHSEE Prep class in order to maximize the opportunity for remediation and success on the CAHSEE exams. Mt. Madonna Continuation High School has clear, consistent boundaries and has developed behavioral expectations and policies, which promote a safe and respectful educational environment for students and staff. Mt. Madonna Continuation High School believes in the collaboration between school, home, and community to provide the best possible education for students. Students who enroll at MMHS are classified as “at risk,” because of social and academic behaviors; these behaviors induce insufficient credits at a comprehensive high school, poor attendance, pregnant/parenting issues, aggressive and passive defiance, apathy, and lack of motivation. Mt. Madonna Continuation High School utilizes community-based support programs to alleviate these factors that place students at risk and address the “wellness,” of our students to enhance academic and social progress. These services deal with a plethora of issues including, but not limited to: drug and alcohol usage, violent behavior, gang activity, incarceration/juvenile justice program, social and emotional behaviors (including suicide ideation), limited parental support, foster care, homelessness and bipolar/manic-depressive illness. Mt. Madonna Continuation High School promotes and encourages “connectiveness,” between students, parents and staff members. Every student has a homeroom teacher/advisor that dialogs with them regarding academics, attendance, work, senior portfolio. The personal attention and mentoring that an individual student receives by their homeroom teacher is invaluable and is the reason Mt. Madonna students are able to successfully complete their requirements and graduate. We strive to know our students and use this relationship to leverage the success of the students. Mt. Madonna Continuation High School prides itself on its holistic approach to education and is complemented by an excellent and dedicated staff. Through alternative methods/strategies, MMHS attempts to meet each student’s needs by providing a safe, nurturing, positive academic and social learning environment.
